Marian stayed with her brother James Spore in 1919 while he was acting lieutenant governor in Guam for a year. While there, she started to paint and couldn’t stop. These Memories of Guam paintings are a series done much later in 1942 and are quite small compared to her other works. Marian said paintings of Gaum were the only paintings that were done entirely by herself and not directed by “They.”

Marian said this painting was supposed to represent monks crossing the desert and Bedouins. This painting sadly has a large tear in the upper right.

Snake Woman 1 (or 2) was featured in Marian’s exhibition on January 10-29, 1938 at The Fine Art Society in London. I feel like it was this version of the painting that was shown because Peter A. Juley & Son photographed this one around that time.

This is a black and white photograph but I’m positive this is one of Marian’s large black and white oil paintings she did during the 1930s when much of her work took on a darker vibe. The white boat appearing on the water seems to be keeping the monsters at bay, maybe even dispersing them. I feel like this painting’s message is a “good conquers all” theme.

I’m not aware of an official title yet for this painting so “Salvation” is my own title for this piece.
