Dictation from the Other Side looks at artists who believed their creativity came from somewhere beyond themselves. Inspired by the Surrealist traditions of automatism and Spiritualism, the exhibition explores the idea that some artists weren’t creating from imagination alone, but were instead receiving ideas through unseen forces, spirit communication, or subconscious inspiration. Rather than viewing art as a purely personal expression, these artists saw themselves as channels, recording messages that originated somewhere else.

Marian Spore Bush is exhibited alongside artists such as Madge Gill, Paulina Peavy, and Beatrice Wood, all of whom explored Spiritualism, mysticism, or Theosophy in their work. The exhibition also includes Surrealists living in exile during World War II and artists connected to New York’s experimental art and jazz communities, all of whom challenged the traditional idea of the artist as a lone creative genius. Instead, they embraced the possibility that inspiration could come from forces beyond the visible world.
