The Ship of Death

Ship of Death - Marian Spore Bush

Image credit: “They” by Marian Spore Bush

The Ship of Death was painted in 1922, early in her career. I believe it was one of her favorite pieces and people and critics responded well to it when it was exhibited at the Anderson Galleries in 1923. She also wrote about this painting in her autobiography They which was published posthumously. Marian also painted a companion painting she called The Ship of Life, but I have not been able to find a good-quality picture of this painting yet besides an old newsprint one.

The Ship of Death was described as having a “deep, cool, dark blue sky” and I know the color reproduction in the book does not do it any justice at all.
