A Paper Design

Man and Animals - Marian Spore Bush

Since Marian’s paintings first appeared in one of Slotins Folkart Auction’s 2015 auctions, the auction house has been the primary source for sales of her artwork. During their Self Taught Art Masterpieces April 2024 auction, four of Marian’s paintings were available. Three of them were works on paper and one was a large canvas that had previously been to auction in 2015 called The Oasis.

Slotins dated this piece to the 1930s-1940s but I strongly feel these works on paper are some of her early work from 1919-1922 when she was just starting to listen to what “They” were instructing. “A paper design” was written on the back of this one. Tack holes show along the edges. There were two paintings from this 2024 auction titles “A Paper Design.”

Some of the paint has rubbed off the plums and the painting shows tack holes.

This is a black and white photograph but I’m positive this is one of Marian’s large black and white oil paintings she did during the 1930s when much of her work took on a darker vibe. The white boat appearing on the water seems to be keeping the monsters at bay, maybe even dispersing them. I feel like this painting’s message is a “good conqueres all” theme.

I do not know the real title of this painting so I named it “Souls” for now.

Flowers were a favorite of Marian’s to paint. She often used her bas relief technique when painting fruit and flowers.

Marian painted a series in 1922 she referred to as her “temple paintings.” This image may be from that time or something she painted a little later. The delicate boat and person is just precious.

This stunning painting really shows off Marian’s bas relief technique that added to the beauty of her paintings. I would LOVE to see this in color and really hope this beauty is still out there somewhere hanging on a wall.

Marian did a few paintings featuring birds in this style. This image is from a black and white photo. I suspect it is a large canvas like the other known bird paintings.

Snake Woman 1 (or 2) was featured in Marian’s exibition January 10-29, 1938 at The Fine Art Society in London. I feel like it was Snake Woman (1) that was shown. This image is from a black and white photo. I’m confident the two paintings are the same exact size.
