Marian said this painting was supposed to represent monks crossing the desert and Bedouins. It was one of the featured paintings in The Wildenstein Gallery show January 15-24, 1934.
I have often wondered if this painting was later called Three Tents for her Grand Central Art Gallery show 1947 after she had passed. Three Tents was on loan by Mrs. Lydia Allison and it certainly could be a descriptor for this painting.
In 2015, this painting originally had a large tear in the upper right when it first went to auction. The second photo was taken for the Marian Spore Bush: Life Afterlife, Works c. 1919–1945 (July 9-September 6, 2025) at Karma Gallery in New York City where it was one of the featured works in the show. You can see the tear has been beautifully repaired. You have until September 6 to go see this lovely painting in person at Karma.
